New Waste Depot Access Program
Starting January 1, 2025, all municipal waste depots, formerly referred to as 'transfer stations', will operate under a new Waste Depot Access Program.
Non-curbside* residents will receive a package in the mail in late 2024 containing the following:
- A letter outlining program details.
- Two valid Municipality of Chatham-Kent Waste Depot Access Permits for use in different vehicles. A permit must be presented to the operator at all municipal waste depots upon entry to dispose of non-curbside household waste. This permit allows disposal of up to six garbage bags per week and unlimited household recycling.
- A sheet of twelve Municipality of Chatham-Kent Bulk Item Vouchers, with three vouchers dedicated to each quarter of the year. The vouchers are valid during the following periods: Q1 (Jan 1 - Mar 31), Q2 (Apr 1 - Jun 30), Q3 (Jul 1 - Sep 30), and Q4 (Oct 1 - Dec 31). One voucher permits the disposal of one bulk item. This will align non-curbside service levels with the services offered to curbside residents.
- Frequently asked questions.
Please contact the Municipality if you are a non-curbside resident and have not received the package by November 30th, 2024. Be ready to provide proof of address to determine eligibility.
Residents are asked to use their designated waste depot based on their civic address. If you are unsure of which depot you are dedicated to, please visit Chatham-Kent Garbage and Recycling Maps for further information. This program will ensure non-curbside residents receive the full benefit of the service and will limit curbside residents to the services for which they are eligible including disposal of tires, white goods (appliances), scrap metal, used oil, and electronic waste.
Permits and vouchers will expire every year on December 31st. To renew your permits free of charge, bring your expiring permits to a Municipal Service Centre beginning in November. You can obtain new bulk item vouchers at the same time. Providing new permits will be at a cost of $5.00 per permit.
Please note that there are no changes being made to the eligibility criteria for using municipal depot services as a result of this program. Curbside and non-curbside residents are still eligible to use waste depots for services including the disposal of other divertible materials such as scrap metal, white goods, used oil, tires, and electronic waste, as well as disposal of excess household waste for a fee at Wallaceburg and Harwich depots.
*A non-curbside household is located outside of curbside collection boundaries where the primary waste collection service offered is a Waste Drop-off Depot.
