Municipal Sidewalks
There are over 410 km of sidewalks within Chatham-Kent. Winter Control has been expanded to all municipal sidewalks. Sidewalk plowing will be done by internal staff and contractors based on the following classifications:
Class I
Downtown business areas will have snow and ice removed as close to the bare concrete as possible, plus spreading of salt and/or sand when required to prevent slip and falls. Work will start within 2 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 24 hours of the end of the snow event.
Class II
Mains, arterial, collector streets, bus routes, hospital areas, school areas and bridge structures will be plowed to a snowpack condition. Work will start within 12 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 24 hours of the end of a snow event.
Class III
Local residential and minor collector streets will be plowed to a snowpack condition. Work will start within 24 hours of a 75 mm snow event and will be completed within 48 hours of the end of a snow event.
Class IV
Walkways or sidewalks in park areas would not be plowed under this contract.
Snow Angel Program
The Snow Angel Program is a community service that provides volunteers to shovel snow for seniors and shut-ins who have no other assistance available. Unfortunately, they are not able to take new clients at this time.
