VON Celebrates 125th Anniversary

A flag-raising ceremony was held at the Civic Centre this morning to mark 125 years of VON homecare services in Canada, 84 of those in Chatham-Kent.

VON Chatham-Kent Board Chair JoAnne Dawson said although health care is changing, the work performed by VON through its homecare and community programs is more relevant than ever before.

She said VON, as a non-profit charitable organization receives limited government funding, but the citizens of Chatham-Kent have always stepped up generously to allow the organization to continue its important work.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said he first became aware of VON during his term as United Way Campaign Chair in 2006.

"The VON makes a huge difference in Chatham-Kent," he said, noting that there are more than one dozen VON-involved programs helping residents of all ages.
